I finally nailed a proper skin fade after 6 months of trying

I was over at a buddy's shop in Nashville last weekend and he showed me how he does his skin fades. He told me I was going too high with the clipper before switching to the foil shaver. I always thought you had to take the bulk out first, but he showed me to leave a little more weight at the bottom. Tried his method on a client yesterday and it came out way cleaner than anything I've done before. Has anyone else found a simple trick that changed how they do fades?

30 bucks for a skin fade where I live and people still complain about the price. I've been cutting for 8 years and I still think skin fades are overrated, most guys look better with a little stubble left. The real trick to a good fade is blending the bald spot on top so it doesn't look like a landing strip.

most guys look better with a little stubble left" - you really think that's true across the board? I'm curious how many people actually prefer a 0 guard over full skin when they sit in your chair.

My buddy Steve used to fight with skin fades for like a year. He finally figured out he was angling his clipper wrong, going straight in instead of scooping out. He said once he started rolling his wrist a little at the bottom, the transition looked way more natural. His first few fades after that were still rough but way better than before. He told me it was like unlocking a cheat code or something.
