I finally checked out that new barber school in Sacramento

Went by there last Thursday to see what the vibe was. They had a whole section just for teaching straight razor shaves, which I haven't seen in a while. The instructor said they spend 40 hours on it before letting students touch a client. It made me realize how much that skill has faded in some shops. How many of you still offer a proper hot towel shave?

Straight razor shaves are a total waste of time. Most guys just want a quick trim and to get out the door. Why would a shop waste 40 hours teaching something nobody asks for anymore?

Man I read an article about this exact thing! It was talking about how straight razor shaves are making a comeback as a special treat, like a fancy dinner out. It's not for every day, but some guys really want that old school experience. Calling it a waste of time misses the point, it's about the craft and the whole vibe. Those 40 hours are probably why it feels so good when it's done right.

Yeah right? Next thing you know people will be saying hand-knitted sweaters are a waste of time because you can buy one at Walmart for $15... totally missing the point of having something made with care. Those 40 hours of practice probably turn a shaky hand into someone who can make a guy feel like a million bucks for 20 minutes. Sure, it's not for the dude rushing to his 9-to-5, but neither is getting a massage or sitting through a fancy meal. Let the old-school enthusiasts have their thing, jeez.
