Finally nailed a clean fade on my own head after 6 months of trying

My right side always had a little dip near the temple. Fixed it by switching to a 1/2 guard first instead of jumping straight to a 1. Has anyone else struggled with self-fades on their non-dominant side?

Jumped into self-cutting about a year ago and the non-dominant side is still my nemesis. Saw a barber on youtube say most people overthink it and end up going too high with the blend, so now I start my guidelines lower than I think I need them. That tip helped me stop messing up the back of my head too, where I used to leave a little ledge. What helped you get the temple dip sorted out?

Start with a shorter guard than you think you need for the temple dip, like barely a 1 or a 1.5 open. I used to chase the blend up too high right into that hollow spot behind the temple bone and it would look scooped out. What size guard do you usually open with on that side, or do you freehand it? I found switching to a 1.5 open and not going higher than the top of my ear fixed the dip for me.
