The graphic novel I defended for 2 hours in a school board meeting
Last Tuesday I sat through a school board meeting in Austin where a parent pushed to pull 'Gender Queer' from the library. I'd read it twice, so I thought I could just list the good parts, but the debate kept circling back to one page out of 240. Took me 2 hours to realize the real argument wasn't about the book at all, it was about who gets to decide what other people's kids see. The irony is, the book has a ton of resources for teens who are struggling, but nobody wanted to talk about that. Has anyone else sat through a challenge and noticed the actual complaint almost never matches the book's content?
