The copy of The Bluest Eye my grandma found in her church basement looked completely different after I read it

My grandma grabbed this beat-up copy from a donation bin at her church in Ohio. It had this boring cover, like a old textbook from 1993. After I finished it, I could swear the cover looked angrier, like it had been through some stuff. The church secretary told me they stopped putting it in the library because someone complained about the content. Has anyone else had a book visually change for them after you actually understood what it was about?

Did the cover seem to get darker or more faded after you read it? I had a similar thing with Beloved where the red on the cover looked like dried blood once I finished.

That "dried blood" thing with Beloved is spot on... but I think there's something else going on with covers that nobody talks about. It's not just the color fading or getting darker, it's like the texture itself changes in your mind. After you finish a heavy book, your brain starts associating the smooth glossy cover with the rough emotional journey you just took. So you start seeing cracks or creases that aren't really there... like the book physically aged along with you. I caught myself running my fingers over a cover after a tough read and swearing I could feel indentations where the story hit hardest. It's almost like the cover becomes a map of the reading experience instead of just a marketing thing.
