Picked Fahrenheit 451 over To Kill A Mockingbird for my kid's school project, got a call from the principal
My 8th grader had to pick a banned book to write about and I told her to go with Fahrenheit 451 since it's shorter and she's not a big reader. Next thing I know the principal is calling saying another parent complained about the 'fireman' content being anti-authority. Crazy how a book about burning books is still getting people riled up in 2024. Has anyone else had their kid's school push back on a classic banned book pick?

You said "Crazy how a book about burning books is still getting people riled up in 2024" and I gotta push back on that a little. I get the irony is there, but Fahrenheit 451 is literally about a guy who questions authority and ends up joining a rebel group. That's pretty anti-authority by design. The whole POINT is that the firemen are the bad guys and the readers are the good guys. So a parent complaining about anti-authority content is actually... kind of reading the book correctly? They just disagree with the message. I don't think it's crazy at all that a book like that still stirs up arguments. It's practically a tradition at this point.
