My library's challenge response made me rethink how I defend books
After a parent complained about "The Bluest Eye" at our branch in Des Moines, I used to just list awards and reviews. But someone on the board said, "you're arguing with facts when they're scared about feelings." That hit me. Now I start every defense by asking people what about the book bothers them, then I talk about why the story matters to someone like them. Has anyone else switched from facts-first to feelings-first when facing a challenge?
