I read The Handmaid's Tale out loud to my mom and she walked out at page 80

Tbh I thought reading it aloud would make the banning easier to explain, but my mom got mad at the Ceremony scene and said it was 'too graphic for a book people treat as classic.' She grew up in Tulsa and never had to think about women losing rights like that. I learned that some folks hear the words as an attack instead of a warning. Has anyone else tried sharing banned books with older relatives and hit a wall like that?

Reading it out loud is a totally different thing, it makes you sit in it. They hear the warning but their brain files it as something that could never happen to them, so it just sounds like gross fiction instead of a mirror.
