Chose the illustrated Maus over the graphic novel version for my book club

Had to pick between the original Maus and the censored text-only edition for our local group in Austin, went with the full illustrated one because losing the art felt like losing the whole point. Two members who'd never seen it said the mouse faces hit way harder than any prose could, now we're voting on whether to tackle Gender Queer next, anyone else dealt with people pushing the 'safer' versions?

This same debate keeps showing up everywhere now, from schools to church groups, with people treating the pictures as the problem instead of the message. Taking the art out of a graphic book is like stripping the music from a song and calling it the safer version.
