65 books on my banned list and I didn't even realize it

I pulled up the ALA's top 100 banned books list from 2023 and counted 65 that I've read over the years, mostly from library trips back in high school. Turns out half of my favorite childhood paperbacks are being challenged in districts across Texas and Florida right now. How many books on the current banned list have you guys accidentally checked off without knowing they were controversial?

You said "accidentally checked off" and that's EXACTLY what it is. It's like we grew up reading these books because they were good stories and nobody told us they were dangerous. But I've noticed this pattern everywhere now, not just with books. It's the same with music and movies and even certain news articles. Things get swept into this "controversial" pile and suddenly you're second guessing everything you ever enjoyed. It's like they want us to treat our own past like it's something to be ashamed of.

@nancy391 nailed it with that "second guessing everything" part. I saw a news clip last week about a school board arguing over a book I read in 6th grade, felt weirdly guilty for no reason.
