Zelle sent my rent to the wrong guy and my landlord got a stranger's $1,400
So this happened last Tuesday when I was trying to pay my rent before my shift. I'm typing the phone number in fast because I'm already late, and I flip two digits near the end. Hit send on $1,400 through Zelle without even looking at the name that popped up, because who reads that, right? Turns out some dude in Phoenix with almost the same number got my rent money and my landlord got nothing. I called my bank the second I got off shift and they basically shrugged and said Zelle is like handing cash to a stranger, once it's gone it's gone. Filed a dispute anyway, printed all the screenshots, and filed a report with my local PD, who were nice but pretty clear this is a civil thing now. Two days later the guy actually texted me back (my number was in the memo) and said he'd send it back, which he did, minus the fee rage I built up. Now I only pay by check or ACH, and I say the last four digits out loud before I hit send on anything. Did any of you ever get money back after a wrong-number transfer, or am I lucky this guy had a conscience?
I read somewhere that Zelle transfers are basically final once they go through, like there's no rewind button no matter what the bank says. So yeah you got super lucky that guy had a conscience, most people would've just kept it and blocked your number. Smart move saying the last four out loud, I might start doing that too.
