Warning: A teller at my Chase branch in Columbus talked me out of a $3,000 cashier's check and saved me from a scam
A guy called me last Tuesday claiming he was from my power company and said I had 45 minutes to pay $3,000 or they would shut off my electric. He told me to buy a cashier's check and read him the numbers over the phone, which I now know is a huge red flag. I walked into the Chase branch on High Street in Columbus, shaking, and asked the teller to make the check out to a name I had scribbled on a napkin. She looked at the napkin, then at me, and quietly asked if I knew this person in real life. When I said no, she stepped away and came back with a manager, and the two of them spent 20 minutes explaining how the utility scam works. The caller had even spoofed the real power company's number on my phone, so my caller ID showed the actual company name. Has anyone else had a bank employee stop a payment like this, and did you report it anywhere useful?
