Used to write checks for rent at the counter, now I do it on my phone and the fee went from $0 to $2.50
For about 6 years I walked into my credit union branch in Sacramento every month with a paper check for my landlord, and it cost me nothing. Then last March my bank pushed everyone to the mobile app and started charging $2.50 for counter deposits, so I switched to paying rent through the app's bill pay. It saves me a bus ride but I still get nervous that the check clears a day late and I get hit with a late fee. Has anyone found a free way to pay rent digitally, or am I just stuck eating that $2.50 now?
Two bucks fifty a month is thirty bucks a year, which is less than one late fee at most places, so the app bill pay is probably the cheaper bet even with the worry. Landlords usually give you a grace period of a few days anyway, so check your lease and see what it actually says before you lose sleep over a check clearing one day late. And that bus ride to the branch in Sacramento wasn't really free either, your time and fare count for something. Honestly the counter fee is annoying but banks have been pushing folks to digital for years and it's not going back, so pick the option with the least hassle and the smallest hit to your wallet.
