Tried paying my rent with a money order to dodge a $40 fee and the bank put a 5 day hold on it
My landlord only takes checks or money orders, and my bank charges $40 for a counter check, so I grabbed a $1,200 money order at the grocery store for a buck. I dropped it in the mail on a Friday, he deposited it Monday, and his bank sat on it for 5 business days while my account showed the money gone the whole time. So I paid extra in stress and a late fee threat anyway, which defeats the entire point. Turns out a money order is not "cash" on the receiving end, it still has to clear like a regular check. Does anyone have a move that actually beats the fee, or is this just the cost of not having a real checking account?
