TIL why I was overpaying for international transfers for years

Last month I sent $500 to my cousin in the Philippines and got hit with $35 in fees. I just assumed that's how banks work. Then my buddy at work showed me how the exchange rate markup was costing me way more than the flat fee. He sent me a link to a comparison site that showed the real cost across different services. That $35 turned into $12 with another provider. Has anyone else done the math on what your bank is actually charging you?

Why wouldn't you just pay a little more for the peace of mind with your own bank?
