That $50 credit score monitoring service I signed up for actually flagged a fraudulent account I never opened

I paid $50 for a year of credit monitoring from a major agency and it caught a new credit card opened in my name in Texas within 24 hours, but my friend paid the same $50 and got nothing but spam emails for 6 months - is this kind of service worth it or just a gamble?

Right there with you" is exactly how I felt - my cousin signed up for LifeLock after his debit card got cloned and now he swears by it, but my uncle got the same plan and his biggest alert was that his credit score dropped because he paid off a car loan.

Right there with you, the "gamble" part hits hard. I signed up for a different service a couple years back and same thing, it caught a utility account opened in my name out of state within a week. Felt like a lifesaver. But my brother got the same service and all he got was a weekly email trying to sell him identity theft insurance, nothing useful at all. It really seems like these services only work if something is already happening to you, otherwise it's just a waste of money until it's not. Did you cancel the service after it caught that card or are you keeping it going?
