My card got declined at a gas station in rural Nevada last week
I was driving through Beatty, Nevada on a road trip and needed gas bad. Swiped my debit card and it came back declined even though I had plenty of money. Turned out my bank flagged it as fraud because the town was 500 miles from my home. Had to call them from inside the station while a guy behind me waited. Has anyone else had a bank go overboard with fraud alerts like that?

That sounds like a classic case of "the bank thinks I'm a criminal" syndrome. My card once got flagged for a $4 coffee in a town I'd literally lived in for three years, so their fraud detection is about as smart as a screen door on a submarine. Take this with a grain of salt, but maybe call ahead next time or use a travel card that doesn't freak out like mine does.
