My bank froze my account right before rent was due over a $3 transfer
I was at home in Phoenix trying to pay rent online last month when my payment got blocked. The bank's fraud system flagged a tiny $3 test transfer I made to a new budgeting app as 'suspicious' and locked everything. I spent 45 minutes on hold with customer service, and the agent basically said their system is too sensitive and I just had to wait. My landlord got paid late, and I got a fee. Has anyone found a bank that doesn't freak out over small, normal transfers?

Okay, but "freak out over small, normal transfers"? That's their whole job now. My bank texts me if I buy a soda two towns over. It's annoying, but the real problem is the 45 minute hold and the late fee. The system flagging a $3 transfer to a new app is actually pretty logical (new payee, small test amount, that's fraud 101). The fail was the customer service not being able to fix it fast before your rent was due. That's the part that actually matters.

You're totally right about the test transfer being a red flag, I'd probably do the same thing if I ran a bank. My own fraud alert system is just as jumpy, I once got a text for buying fancy coffee in my own neighborhood. The real kicker is always the wait time to clear it up, feels like you're stuck in phone tree purgatory while the clock runs out on your bills.
