Hit $10k in rewards points and realized I've been gaming myself this whole time
So I checked my credit card rewards dashboard last week and saw I'd crossed $10,000 in points since I started using this setup back in 2021. That sounds great on paper, but then I went back through my statements and noticed I'd spent almost $85k on that card to get there, a lot of it on stuff I wouldn't have bought if I wasn't chasing the points. Two big purchases last year were a $2k espresso machine and a $1.4k drone, both sitting in my closet with maybe 10 uses total. I'm starting to think the real game is whether the rewards are actually covering my impulse buying or if I'm just fooling myself with the numbers. Has anyone else done the math on their points vs their spending and had that weird moment where it doesn't feel like a win anymore?

My kitchen counter still has that $600 stand mixer I got 18 months ago just to hit a "spend $500, get 100k points" bonus... used it exactly twice, both times for cookie dough that came from a pre-made tube. I finally did the math last month and realized my "free" flight to Vegas actually cost me about $4,700 in random home goods and a coffee grinder I never even opened. But hey, at least the points made me feel rich while I was shoving all that packaging in the recycling bin...
