The Seattle ATM that made me stop trusting bank convenience fees
Last month I needed cash fast near Pike Place and hit a random bank ATM, got hit with a $4.50 fee plus my own bank's $2 charge. That was a $6.50 mistake for $40 out. I've been a diehard bank loyalist for years, but that moment pushed me to open a brokerage cash account with a debit card that reimburses ATM fees. The catch is the fee refund only shows up after 3 days and I had to wait on hold 20 minutes to verify it. Now I carry less cash and use the card for most purchases, but I still keep a tiny savings account at a credit union for emergencies. Anyone else had a single fee event that flipped their whole setup? What's the math for you between bank fees and broker card perks?

Read a finance blogger breaking down how banks make billions off these fees, and it made me realize the $6.50 was just the tip of the iceberg. I switched to a local credit union that does free ATMs through a shared network, took about a week to get used to the app, but now I don't even think about it. The broker card thing sounds slick but the 3 day wait and hold time would drive me nuts, might be worth checking if your credit union has a similar perk first.
