Overheard a broker say 'banks are just a place to park cash' and it got me thinking
I was grabbing coffee last Tuesday and heard a guy in a suit telling his friend that brokers are for growing money and banks are just for holding it. That made me stop because my credit union savings account has a 4.2% APY right now, which beats my brokerage's money market fund by almost a full point. On the other hand, brokerages give me access to CDs and T-bills that often pay more than bank savings accounts. So which is actually better for someone with $20k who just wants a safe return? Has anyone else run the numbers on this lately and come to a clear winner?

Honestly, for $20k just wanting safe returns, I'd split it down the middle. Put half in a high-yield savings account at your credit union since 4.2% is solid and you can pull it out anytime without penalties. The other half, grab some 6-month or 1-year T-bills through your brokerage since they're paying 5% or better right now and you'll beat the savings rate with zero risk. Ngl, I've drilled this down a few times for my own rainy day fund and that's what I landed on. Just make sure you don't lock up so much in T-bills that you can't cover an emergency without selling early. The broker guy wasn't totally wrong but he was oversimplifying it.

Wait wait wait, you're saying the broker guy was just oversimplifying it? That's rich... I mean, I've had a broker feed me the same cookie-cutter "just buy a CD" line before, and it turns out the T-bill route actually gave me a better yield last time I checked. Splitting it like you said makes way more sense, but honestly, I'm still shook that anyone would trust a broker to be straight with them about safe money. The way they gloss over the details is wild, like they hope you won't notice the fine print or something. You're right about keeping some in the savings account for emergencies though, that's a non-negotiable. Just feels like the broker was pushing easy options instead of what's actually best.
