Overheard a banker say brokers are just middlemen at a coffee shop in Portland

I was grabbing a latte last Tuesday and this guy in a suit was telling his friend that brokers add no value compared to banks. But I moved $15,000 through a broker last year for a business deal and they handled all the paperwork and got me a better rate than my local bank offered. Makes me wonder if that guy just had a bad experience or if there's real truth to what he said. Has anyone else heard similar takes and found them accurate?
