My uncle told me to keep my emergency fund at a credit union, not my bank, and he was right
My uncle works in lending at a credit union in Boise and he kept telling me to move my emergency savings out of my big bank. I blew him off for almost a year because my bank was right down the street and the app was easy. Then I actually compared the numbers and my bank was paying 0.01% APY while his credit union was at 3.4% on a basic savings account. On $6,000 that is about $200 a year I was basically handing over for nothing. I moved the money in March and it took one branch visit and a transfer form. The weird part is my bank never once mentioned a better option when I opened the account. Has anyone else switched from a big bank to a credit union and regretted it, or was it a clear win like mine?
