Chat with my credit union manager about mutual funds

She told me her personal brokerage account earned 3% more per year than her credit union's managed fund, and that hit different because I assumed they were the same thing. Anyone else get better returns going with a discount broker over your local bank's investment options?

Oh man, that stings worse than realizing you've been paying for premium gas in a Corolla. I once bragged to my brother about my "killer" bank returns only to find out he'd beat me by like 4% with a basic Vanguard index fund. It's humbling when the folks who sold you the product admit they don't use it themselves.

Dude, my buddy Mike had the exact same wake up call. He was all proud of his bank's "wealth management" account, talking about it at a cookout like he was Warren Buffett. Then his girlfriend's dad, who's a retired mechanic and just messes with Fidelity on his laptop, casually mentioned he was pulling in way more. Mike checked his own statements later that night and felt like a total fool. He switched everything over to a basic index fund the next week and has never looked back.
