Can we talk about the bank teller who said my $2,300 was "just sitting there"?
I was at my bank in Boise last Tuesday moving some money around, and the teller glanced at my savings account and said the balance was "just sitting there" at 0.4%. She then slid a brochure across the counter for their 11 month CD at 4.1%, and I realized nobody at that branch had ever mentioned rates to me in six years. It got me thinking about the difference between a bank that holds your cash and a broker that actually puts it to work. My buddy uses a brokerage account for the same money and swears the gap adds up to a couple hundred bucks a year. So how do you all split up what stays in the bank versus what goes to a broker?
