That $40 silpat mat I bought vs cheap parchment paper - who's right?

I dropped $40 on a silpat baking mat last month because everyone said it was a game changer for cookies. But honestly my first batch spread way too thin and I ended up using parchment paper anyway. Now I'm wondering if I just got a dud or if the hype is overblown. Has anyone else had this back and forth between silicone mats and the old paper method?

The whole silpat vs. paper thing is like a lot of stuff we buy hoping it'll fix everything. We get sold on the promise that spending more money makes life easier but it never works out that cleanly. Sounds like your silpat isn't a dud, it's just a different tool. Maybe it shines for softer things like macarons or rolling out dough but fails at the one job you actually wanted it for. It's the same pattern with expensive kitchen gadgets or fancy workout gear - we expect them to do the work for us. Parchment paper is cheap and reliable, and sometimes that's all you really need.

Paper's always worked fine for me too, no need to fix what isn't broken.
