Pro tip: A cheap oven thermometer fixed my burnt cookies problem
I kept burning the bottoms of my sugar cookies even though my oven was set to 350. Turns out my oven was actually running at 385 degrees according to a $8 Taylor thermometer I picked up at Target. After adjusting my baking temp down by 30 degrees, everything came out even for the first time in 2 years. Has anyone else had a huge swing between your dial setting and the real temp inside?

Yeah but I gotta disagree a little with @emmag40 on this one. An oven running 30-50 degrees off is a real mechanical problem, not just life being unfair like a thermostat that's a few degrees off. I had the same oven issue and my cookies were black on the bottom and raw in the middle for months. Once I actually checked with a thermometer it was an easy fix. A toaster burning stuff is just bad design, but an oven that can't hold its temp is something you can actually fix by calibrating or just knowing your offset. It's not everything lying to us, it's just ovens being really bad at staying accurate.

Set your thermostat to 72 and it feels like 68, set your microwave for 2 minutes and it burns. Everything lies to us, toasters are the worst.
