My sourdough starter died after I left town for a weekend and my friend forgot to feed it.

Mine dried out completely last summer. I scraped out the dried crust, kept about a tablespoon of the hard stuff from the bottom, and mixed it with warm water and a little honey. Fed it equal parts flour and water twice a day for about five days. It came back to life and is actually stronger now. The key was using lukewarm water and keeping it in a warm spot.

Mine looked totally dead last winter. I put the jar in a bowl of warm water to slowly bring the temperature up, then fed it with whole wheat flour. It took almost a week of regular feeding before I saw bubbles again. The whole wheat seemed to give it a better kickstart than my usual white flour.

Oh wow yeah Ive had the same thing happen with my starter before. I mean mine looked totally lifeless and I was about to toss it honestly. But what ended up working for me was pretty similar to what you did with the whole wheat. I mixed in a little rye flour actually and that really seemed to wake things up. It took me like a week of feeding it twice a day too before I saw any real action. Idk maybe the darker flours just have more of the good stuff in them for the yeast to eat. Glad yours bounced back though because its so frustrating when you think youve killed it.
