My sourdough starter died after I forgot it in the car for 3 hours

Last Saturday I ran errands in Austin and left my starter on the passenger seat. It was 94 degrees and by the time I got back it was bubbling weird and smelled like vinegar and old socks. I tried to feed it twice but it never recovered, so I tossed it and started a new one from scratch on Monday. Anyone else had a starter go bad from heat or did I just get unlucky with that batch?
