My grandma watched me frost a cake and asked why I was holding the bag like a pencil
I was at her kitchen table in Ohio trying to pipe rosettes on a birthday cake, and after about 10 minutes she asked why I was gripping the bag like a pencil instead of letting it rest in my palm. She used to run a small bakery out of her house in the 70s, and she showed me the old way she learned, where your whole hand does the work and your wrist barely moves at all. It felt wrong for the first few cakes, but now the frosting comes out so much smoother, so how did you all learn to hold a piping bag?
The "whole hand does the work" thing is wild because I feel like that's true for tons of stuff we learn young, like drumming or even holding a fork. Nobody teaches you the real way up front, you just copy whatever feels natural and find out years later you've been doing it the hard way.
