My grandma's pie recipe called for 'a knob of butter' and I finally looked it up
I've been making her apple pie for 10 years, always just guessing with a pat or two. Last Tuesday I found an old note in the recipe box that said 'knob = about 2 tablespoons, ask your grandfather'. He passed in 2008 so tracking down that answer took a while. Turns out my pies were always fine, but now I know. Did anyone else grow up with vague measurements like this, or was my family just weird?

My dad's banana bread recipe just says "a bunch of mashed bananas" and I still have no clue if that means two or four. I always grab whatever looks ripe and it turns out fine no matter what. Grandma recipes are basically a trust exercise at this point.
