My hot take: I liked jury duty, and that week in March was the best I'd felt in a while
I know that sounds insane but hear me out. I got picked for a 3 day trial at the county courthouse downtown in March and I was dreading it, mostly because of the parking situation and the lost work. Turns out I got there at 7:45am, found a spot two blocks away, and spent the next few hours reading a paperback in a quiet room with no phone ringing. The case itself was a boring property dispute but watching the lawyers argue over a fence line was weirdly gripping, and I ate lunch at this little diner on 5th with a guy named Ray who'd been on juries six times and gave me the full rundown on how the process works. Nobody texted me, nobody needed anything, and I got home by 4:30 each day feeling like I'd done something instead of just pushing emails around. My wife thinks I'm nuts for saying I'd do it again, but the structure of it was honestly relaxing after weeks of chaos at work. Has anyone else had a week where the thing you were dreading turned out to be the calmest part of your month?
