My buddy in Portland swore a $9 rice cooker would beat my $180 one, and I ate my words for 3 weeks straight
He picked it up at a thrift store on Hawthorne and kept telling me the cheap ones just work, which I laughed off for weeks. So we did a blind taste test with the same jasmine rice, and the $9 cooker's pot came out fluffier than mine 4 out of 5 times. I still think mine looks nicer on the counter, but I can't argue with the bowl in front of me. What cheap kitchen thing have you sworn off that actually turned out fine?
Curious what the actual difference was between the two cookers. Was it the pot itself, the heating element, the lid fit, or just that his machine happened to run a little hotter and drier than yours? I ask because my gut says cheap cookers often win blind tests simply by cooking faster and firmer, not because they are built better. Did you two ever swap pots or run a second round with a different rice? Also what brand is your $180 one, because for that price I would want it to at least beat a thrift store find.
