Hot take: I told a neighbor their dog was ugly and it turned into a whole thing
About 6 months ago, my neighbor was talking about how their dog was a rare breed. I kind of blurted out that I thought it looked like a rat with a wig. They got super quiet and now they barely say hi to me in the hallway. Has anyone else accidentally offended someone over something dumb like that?

People these days get way too attached to their pets and take any little comment as a personal attack. You probably hit a nerve because they were proud of that dog being special and you popped their bubble. I've noticed it's safer to just smile and nod when someone shows off their animal, even if it looks like a mop with eyes. Maybe you could try breaking the ice by saying something nice about their dog next time, even if you don't mean it. Life's too short to have hallway tension over a funny looking pooch.

What do you mean by "any little comment" though? Was this person actually just pointing out the dog's looks, or was it something closer to insulting the owner's taste in dogs? In my experience, there's a big difference between teasing someone about their ugly-cute pug and straight up saying their dog is hideous. Folks can get pretty wound up about their pets, sure, but usually there's a reason the reaction was that strong. Maybe it's worth asking what exactly was said before everyone decides the neighbor is just being sensitive.
