Vent: best week ever vs worst week ever with these birds
Last Tuesday my silkie went broody and hatched 3 chicks in the nesting box. Then Thursday a hawk took my favorite hen right in front of me. How do you all handle the emotional roller coaster of losing one while gaining others?

The silkie chicks are a good distraction but it still stings watching that empty spot where your hen used to be. I bury mine under a favorite bush and say a few words, then go hold the new babies for a bit. It's the circle thing but man it's rough when it happens back to back like that.

My buddy Mike lost two hens in three days last spring to a fox. He buried the first one under the old lilac bush by the fence, the second next to it. @black.jordan said he picked up a couple of buff Orpington chicks at the feed store that same week, but he told me he still caught himself looking for those hens at the feeder for a month. He said chicks help but they don't fill the same hole, you know?
