Thought those expensive heritage breeds were just hype - I was wrong
Back in 2019 I paid $45 for 3 Australorp chicks and told my wife it was a waste. Fast forward to this spring, my 4 year old hen is still laying 5 eggs a week while my buddy's production reds from Tractor Supply burned out after 18 months. Got a neighbor who breeds Buckeyes and her flock barely gets sick compared to my old hybrid setup. Anyone else find the upfront cost worth it in the long run?

Exactly like you said with the cast iron. I learned the hard way with cheap chicks too. Kept losing half the flock every winter to illness. Now I buy from a local guy who breeds Marans. They're tough, smart, and I haven't lost one in two years. That $45 for three birds isn't bad when you figure they're still going strong at year 4. The Tractor Supply birds just don't have the same genetics for longevity or disease resistance.

Find it's the same with a lot of things people cheap out on. Bought a cheap cast iron skillet once and it warped on me in six months. A good Lodge one cost twice as much but I've had it for ten years and it's still perfect. Same deal with tools and appliances, you pay more once or pay over and over for replacements.
