The $18 vent fan from a yard sale saved my coop this summer and I keep telling everyone
So back in July I was about to give up on my coop setup. I have 6 hens in a 8x10 shed out back and temps here in Fresno were hitting 104 for like two straight weeks. I lost one hen last summer to heat and I was not doing that again. I grabbed a little 8 inch inline fan at a yard sale for $18, the guy wanted $25 but I talked him down. Mounted it up near the roof vent and wired it to a cheap thermostat plug. That combo pulls the hot air out and my coop stayed around 92 inside while it was 104 outside. The girls were still panting a bit but nobody got sick and egg numbers stayed steady at 5 or 6 a day. My neighbor has the same size coop and no fan, he lost 2 birds in that same stretch. I know it's not fancy but for 18 bucks I feel like I got away with something. Anyone else running a fan setup, and did you bother with a thermostat or just leave it on all day?
