Switched from a basic feeder to a treadle feeder and my feed bill dropped 30%

I used a simple hanging feeder for my flock of 8 hens for about a year. Last month I finally bought a treadle feeder from a local farm store for $85. The difference is crazy, the wild birds and squirrels can't get to it anymore and the girls aren't scattering food everywhere. I'm saving almost a full 50lb bag of feed every three weeks now. Anyone else have a specific change that cut down on waste this much?

Guess it took a treadle feeder to show the old one was just a fancy bird buffet. That's a pretty solid return on investment for just changing a piece of gear. Makes you wonder what else we're all wasting money on without even noticing.

Oh come on, is it really that deep? I mean yeah, a treadle feeder saves some seed, but we're talking about a few bucks a month here, not a leaky roof or a bad car payment. Folks get real dramatic about bird feeders, but I'd rather just enjoy watching the squirrels do their circus act for free.

My neighbor told me his old feeder wasted almost 40 pounds of seed a month to squirrels and sparrows. That's a whole bag just gone. It's crazy how a simple design change with a treadle can lock that down. Makes me look at my own garage full of gadgets differently now.
