Snapped a shovel handle trying to bust up frozen chicken poop last week

Temp dropped to 15 degrees here in Indiana and the coop floor was a solid block. I was using a standard round point shovel to chip away at it and the handle just snapped right at the grip. Had to go buy a metal handled one from Tractor Supply for $22. That plastic coated wood junk is worthless in the cold. Anyone else break tools trying to deal with winter coop cleanup?

Metal handled shovel all the way. Snapped two wooden handles myself before wising up. That cold makes the wood brittle as glass.

Friend of mine tried to save money with a wooden handle last winter and it snapped clean in half on the third scoop of packed snow. @grant.luna you're right, that cold does something nasty to the wood.
