Showerthought: the deep litter method is overrated and I'm going back to pine shavings
Three years ago I switched my whole 8x10 coop in Duluth to deep litter because every forum post swore by it, and by week 6 the ammonia smell hit me at the door before I even opened it. Everyone says just add more carbon and turn it, but I was hauling in 2 extra bags of shavings a week and still fighting damp when the fall rain came through. I pulled all of it out on a Saturday in October and went back to a plain 4 inch pine shaving layer changed every 2 weeks, and my girls have been breathing easier since. Has anyone up north had deep litter actually stay dry through a wet fall, or is it just a warm climate thing?
