Serious question, my egg count dropped from 6 a day to 2 after a guy at the feed store in Tulsa told me to change one thing
I was tossing kitchen scraps straight into the run twice a day and getting 6 eggs from my 8 hens, but a guy at the feed store in Tulsa pointed out the corn and bread were basically filling them up with cheap calories instead of real protein. Switched to a proper 16% layer crumble with oyster shell on the side and added a little scratch only as a treat, and after about 10 days the count climbed back to 5 or 6 with way harder shells. Did anyone else get called out for overdoing the scraps, and what did you swap in to fix it?
The "cheap calories" thing isn't quite right, corn and bread are actually pretty low protein but the real problem is they fill up on carbs and leave no room for the layer feed. Hens eat a set amount by volume each day, so if scraps make up half of that they're missing the protein and calcium they need. Cut the scraps way down and they'll eat the crumble that actually makes eggs.
