Remember when everyone said you needed a full acre for a decent flock?
I started with 6 hens in my Portland backyard 8 years ago on a quarter acre, and now I see setups with 10 birds in urban lots half that size. What's the smallest space you've made work for your birds?

Has anyone considered how the type of ground cover changes what a small space can handle? I used to have bare dirt and it turned into a muddy mess, but planting a tough clover mix in their run changed everything. It handles the traffic, stays cleaner, and gives them something to peck at all day. The space feels bigger to the birds when there's more going on at ground level.

Doesn't clover get torn up pretty fast in a small run? Mine always wreck any green cover in a few weeks.
