My neighbor's comment about my rooster made me rethink his whole job
My neighbor across the fence in Ohio told me my rooster was just 'noise with legs' and it got me thinking. All this time I saw him as the flock protector, but watching him for a week, he really does spend 80% of his day strutting and crowing at his own shadow. Has anyone else realized their rooster is more show than substance, or am I just bad at picking roosters?

Honestly that tracks with so much of life, I mean you see it with people in charge everywhere. The guy who yells the loudest in the HOA meeting usually isn't the one who actually fixes the fence, he's just the one who makes sure everyone hears him complaining about it. I had a neighbor with a rooster who sounded like a fire alarm all morning, but when a stray dog got in the yard it was the hens that raised the racket and the rooster was on top of the shed watching. Maybe the crowing is the job, like the uniform, and the real work just doesn't happen where we're looking.
