My cochin went broody in a heat wave, lesson learned about shade placement

Last July we had a string of 95 degree days here in Ohio and my Buff Cochin, Dottie, decided that was the perfect time to sit on a nest of fake eggs. She was panting so bad I thought she was sick, and her comb was pale. I finally moved her into a wire dog crate in the garage with a fan and it took her 4 days to snap out of it. Now I keep my coop under the big maple tree and I check the hens twice a day when it's hot. Has anyone else dealt with a stubborn broody during summer? How did you break it without stressing them out?

Did you try talking to her about the weather forecast? Mine ignore me completely, they just give me that sideways stink eye like I'm the one being unreasonable. Last summer my Orpington went broody during a heat advisory and I swear she was trying to melt herself into soup on purpose. I ended up doing the same thing with a crate and a frozen water bottle wrapped in a towel, and she was so mad she didn't talk to me for a week. Chickens hold grudges longer than my ex-husband, I'm telling you.
