My chicken waterer froze solid last night and I had to improvise

Went out this morning and the 5 gallon plastic base was a solid block of ice. It got down to 15 degrees here in Boise, colder than I expected. I brought the whole thing inside, thawed it in the sink, and then wrapped the base with an old towel and a bungee cord for some insulation. Anyone have a better winter hack that doesn't involve buying a heated base?

Ever try those foam pipe insulators? They're cheap and cut to fit.

My old apartment in Chicago had pipes that would sing every winter. I wrapped every exposed inch with that foam stuff from the hardware store. It didn't look pretty but it stopped the banging and kept the hot water hot longer. That was the only thing that got me through a few brutal winters there.

I used to think heated bases were the only real fix.
