My chicken waterer froze solid 3 nights in a row last week

It was 18 degrees here in Ohio and I kept waking up to a solid block of ice in their waterer. I tried wrapping it in a towel but that did nothing, and now one of my girls looks a little listless. Has anyone found a cheap way to keep water from freezing without buying a heated base?

Did you try putting their waterer inside a bigger container with some salt water around it? I used to think that was pointless until a bad cold snap last year, now I swear by it. The salt water stays liquid way below freezing and keeps the inside from turning into a solid block, has that helped you at all?

Yeah, and adding a floating piece of wood slows the freezing down too.
