Hot take: letting my hens free range for 6 hours actually cut my feed bill in half
Everyone in my coop tour group in Columbus said free ranging just means losing birds to hawks and having eggs hidden everywhere. I tried it anyway for a month, starting with 3 hours after breakfast and working up to a full afternoon. My 8 hens slowed their layer pellet intake from a 50 pound bag every 3 weeks to every 6 weeks, which is about $18 saved a month. They also stopped bullying each other over the feeder and started scratching up way more grubs and clover on their own. I did lose one to a red tail last Tuesday, but I added a cheap dog kennel panel roof over part of the yard as a bolt hole. Has anyone else seen their egg quality dip or stay steady when they cut commercial feed back this much?
