Gave my hens frozen watermelon during the July heat wave and now they ignore their regular water
It hit 98 degrees in Lexington last week so I froze half a watermelon and set it out in the run around noon. By 2pm all six hens were pecking at it instead of drinking from their nipple waterer, and one of them, my barred rock, just stood next to the melon for an hour. The next morning I caught three of them standing by the empty spot where the melon had been, ignoring the fresh water I'd just refilled. Now I'm wondering if I made them picky or if this is just normal summer behavior. Has anyone else had birds get weird about their water after giving them frozen treats?
