Fought myself over pine shavings vs sand in the coop, and 6 weeks later I have thoughts
When I set up my coop in Fresno last spring I couldn't decide between a $12 bale of pine shavings or a $9 bag of construction sand, so I split the run and tried both for 6 weeks. The sand side stayed way drier and I just scooped it like kitty litter, but the shavings side broke down into compost faster for my garden beds. Anyone else pick one and regret it, or do you run both like I'm doing now?
My uncle ran sand in his coop down in Bakersfield for years and swore by it until he had to haul it all out by the wheelbarrow when it got packed down and stinky in the wet spots. Took him two weekends and his back still bugs him from it. Pine shavings in my setup turn into this dark crumbly stuff in about 3 months that my tomatoes go crazy for. Splitting the run seems smart though, lets you see which one fits your flock instead of guessing.
