Debating whether to let my rooster free range or keep him penned up after a close call
Last weekend my neighbor Karen, who's raised chickens for 15 years, said her flock was fine without a rooster and that mine was just a liability waiting for a hawk or a neighbor complaint. I mean, I love having him for protection and the morning crowing, but after he chased her kid across the yard I'm second guessing everything. So what do you all think - is it worth keeping a rooster for security if he causes drama, or should I just rehome him and rely on a secure run?

Honestly, that sounds like a rough spot to be in. I feel for you because it's not like you can just magically make the rooster stop doing what roosters do. Tbh, I've seen this play out before with a buddy of mine and his flock. He ended up rehoming his rooster after it got too aggressive with the kids in the neighborhood, and he said it was the best call for everyone's sanity. Your neighbor is probably just looking out for her kid, but you gotta do what feels right for you and the bird too. Ngl, if the crowing and protection are a big deal to you, maybe try a taller fence or a covered run first before making the final call.

Right, because nothing says "good morning" like a feathered alarm clock at 4:45 AM who also moonlights as a tiny velociraptor. Tell your neighbor you'll trade her the rooster for a noise complaint and a six-pack of earplugs, fair deal.
